What Causes Hair Loss in Men?

Most Men Lose Their Hair. Here’s Why.

One of the things you can expect at Anthony’s is that you’ll learn about your hair. We won’t burden you with too much information, but we want you to make choices based on knowledge, not just what you’ve heard. When you understand your own hair and the mechanisms of hair loss, you can actively improve the experience you have in any salon.

First Things First

Male pattern baldness causes 95% of hair loss. For that reason, the vast majority of men have similar hair loss. Thinning begins at the temples and the crown of the head, and if no action is taken, balding will continue until the two areas meet until only a horseshoe-shaped ring of hair is left.

The difficult thing about male pattern baldness is that it can strike at any age. A quarter of men will begin losing hair faster than they grow it by the time they reach 30. By the time 60 rolls around, two thirds of men are going bald. Most of our clients are between the ages of 25 and 60, but when you look at men 80 and over, almost three quarters are losing their hair. That means that only 1 out of every 4 men wins the hair-retention lottery and keeps his hair for most of his life. Half of us will have to deal with male pattern baldness as a simple fact of adult life.

You need to understand DHT.

We know that balding is genetic, and we know that more than half of men are genetically predisposed to losing their hair. What we don’t know is exactly who and why DHT works the way it does.

Here’s what we do know. DHT is a hormone that’s stronger then testosterone. Its full name is Dihydrotestosterone. DHT causes hair follicles to miniaturize and gradually deteriorate. When hair becomes miniaturized, its growth is stunted and it doesn’t make it through the whole growth cycle. It doesn’t become fully grown terminal hair. That’s why you begin to see more short, thin, colorless hair in the first stages of hair loss. This starts gradually and can progress at different rates, so it’s important to see a professional as soon as possible when you begin to notice miniaturized hair. The hair follicles will eventually go dormant and completely stop growing hair altogether.

You know who you can trust.

When we’re talking about hair loss, you can feel comfortable because you’ll always work directly with Anthony. The person working to resolve your hair loss will always be the person who knows exactly why it’s happening. And you’ll understand why the solutions we’re suggesting match up with what’s causing you to go bald.

Let’s rule out some bigger issues.

As everyone knows, men lose their hair thanks to heredity and male pattern baldness. That’s almost always true. But for a handful of men, other factors may be at play. Some of these can be reversible if taken care of, and others indicate medical problems that should be treated as quickly as possible. So verifying the cause of your hair loss is step one. That lets us rule out bigger problems, confirms that certain solutions won’t work for you, and ensures that you don’t waste your time or money.
